Frequently Asked Questions
I am planning to propose to my girlfriend and surprise her with an engagement ring. Should I place it on the left or right ring finger?
In most Western countries, it is ordinarily worn on the ring finger of one's left hand. However, this may vary among countries. Some countries such as Germany and Greece wear both the wedding and engagement rings on their right hand.
Diamond engagement rings are very expensive and I have a limited budget, what other gem could I buy as an alternative?
It depends on the taste of your girlfriend. Some women prefer other types of precious stones such as colored ones – rubies, emeralds and sapphires. Some even prefer soft stones such as pearls and opals. In Germany, engagement rings are plain gold bands without the diamond. So, it would be a good idea to know what your girlfriend likes.
I have inherited my grandmother's heirloom diamond ring which I plan to give as an engagement present to my girlfriend but the design looks very old, what should I do to remedy this?
Congratulations! You just saved yourself thousands of dollars. Since diamonds are recyclable, you could re-set them into new mounts (rings) to make it more stylish and in vogue. Some would prefer to re-tip the claws to better secure the diamonds or place a shank at the bottom of the ring. A good steam cleaning, and viola! Its original magnificence is restored.
Do I buy an engagement ring at a jewelry store or in a pawnshop would suffice?
Quality, authenticity and craftsmanship is ensured when purchasing from a reputable jewelry store while in a pawnshop it would be possible to get a good deal but you would not know if the product is fake, stolen or of poor quality.
How much does a diamond ring costs?
Cost varies and depends largely on the 4Cs: carat, color, clarity and cut.
When purchasing a ring, do I pay by cash or credit?
Some stores offer plans with no interest for a time period on approved credit, others may offer layaway plans. Since this will be a major purchase, make sure to check out rewards from card companies. If paying by cash, it is better to use a certified cheque or draft from a bank rather than using your own personal check.
