Choosing a dress

Your wedding is your chance to be a princess for a day, and you need the gown to complete the dream. While wading through tons of bridal magazines and websites for that “perfect dress”, first consider your body type. A sheath may look gorgeous on the model, but its body-hugging cut will accentuate every flaw. If you have a wide waist, avoid puffy skirts and draw eyes upward with a decorated bodice. If you have heavy shoulders or are large at the bust, choose a dress with a detailed skirt or a drop waist. As a general rule, a-lines flatter almost every shape). The length of your aisle also determines how long your veil can be, as a long train with embroidery at the hem won't be noticed if it's bunched up at your ankles. When fitting for the gown, bring a shoe with the same-sized heel that you plan to wear at your wedding. Also remember to get a sample swatch of the material to help you pick matching shoes and bags.

If you're on a budget, consider having your mother's dress refitted (vintage dresses are all the rage) and buying off-the-rack (the best time to go shopping for bargains is right after prom season). Remember you can always wear a classic dress made of very nice material, then “glam” it up with costume jewelry or a gorgeous flower headpiece and veil.
