Gift List Tips

  • Include a variety of gifts so that whatever the taste of the person buying the present, there's bound to be something there that appeals to them and that they would be happy to give you.
  • Compile a list to cater for all pockets. That way, no one feels pressured into buying something they can't afford.
  • Although strict wedding etiquette demands that no mention of a gift list is made with the invitations, in practice most couples include some reference to their list as it's easier for everyone concerned.
  • To help with thank you letters, keep a note of all the people who bought you gifts and/or copies of updates from the list so you know exactly who gave what when it comes to writing.
  • Don't just think of the here and now – think ahead. You may not be interested in a fancy cutlery set at the moment, but in later years, it could come in useful. As marriage is supposed to be, these are gifts for life, not just the next few years.
  • If you want a list at a large department store, sign up early - especially if you are getting married in the summer months, when spaces on these lists are in great demand.
